Photoshop 2021 (Version 22.0.0)
On July 4, the New York Times published an opinion piece titled “How the Public and the Private Should Be on the Same Page.”
Authored by Kenneth C. Russell, the article explains: “Technological advances have created a situation in which the private sector can mine citizens’ personal data and turn it into usable, concentrated and consumer-friendly products. In an odd alliance between the government and the private sector, the government is helping make that happen by championing and promoting policies that create a level playing field for corporate data collection and marketing.”
The article admits that a central tenet of the U.S. Constitution — freedom — is under attack. The Times calls for government action on an issue that is ripe for restriction.
The idea of curtailing freedom is a perpetual theme for progressives. The notion that we should do what is best for our nation is a bedrock of the left’s brain.
Not one of the major presidential candidates has an original idea, but the Democrats are well positioned with a wide voter pool.
In a just-released poll, most Democrats and Americans say they oppose the government collecting data on citizens. This includes Republicans who say they are neutral. Democrats believe data gathering is a bad idea. However, Republicans and Independents are willing to support government collecting data on consumers.
Of course, government data collecting is a good thing if done properly. But Americans are not buying the premise that government has a duty to know everything about us.
The overwhelming majority believe the government should protect their privacy, something the Democrats and progressives are not interested in.
Democratic voters believe over 80 percent of Americans deserve government protection of their personal data. Not one major candidate has a good answer. However, Hillary Clinton is the most likely to create a database to collect the information that will benefit politically connected companies.
Americans believe that companies have no business selling personal data. However, they do believe that companies need protection to reveal their malicious behavior. This desire for some semblance of privacy is driven by the media and social media platforms.
Social media is a major issue for progressives. The fact that you can criticize and ridicule people in public has been blown out of proportion by the left. The internet allows anyone to be heard.
Social media will be regulated in some fashion. When that happens, private ownership of social media will be allowed, but the left will still want regulation. Even President Obama, who criticized the

The Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to terms with outfielder Carlos Ruiz on a one-year contract, according to a team official. Ruiz, 40, played for the Phillies in 2013, hitting.241 with nine home runs in 84 games. Ruiz is eligible to be the club’s Opening Day designated hitter, along with Jeanmar Gomez.
The Phillies did not comment on the signing, but the timing of the signing—signed, and Ruiz already in camp—indicates that this move is more about covering bases than about winning, as it was when Marlon Byrd and Shane Victorino were signed. The Phillies do not have any designated hitters left on the 40-man roster.
Ruiz had been mulling retirement until the Phillies signed him in 2012. He hit.289 with 13 home runs and 67 RBIs for the Phillies, and his 33 stolen bases were a career-high. Ruiz had also missed most of the 2011 season with a foot injury, but he returned to form in 2012.
Prior to the 2012 season, Ruiz, who had never played above AAA, signed a minor-league deal with the Phillies for $750,000 in 2011. That means that the Phillies will be on the hook for $750,000 for Ruiz in 2013.
It remains to be seen how Ruiz will be used by the Phillies this season. Ruiz will be the DH and bat ahead of Gomez, who hit.325 in spring training last year, with three home runs and nine RBIs in 22 at-bats. Ruiz will be a platoon partner with Ryan Howard as well, with left-handers expected to be the main focus for the outfield. David Robertson, Vince Velasquez and Jeremy Horst are among the left-handers expected to give the Phillies good pitches to hit.
The Phillies announced on Monday that outfielder Domonic Brown has joined the major league club and will be with the club until he is sent down. The move places a spot on the 25-man roster for Ruiz, who will be back in camp, but will spend the entire season on the injured list.Baseball is back!
And the long, drawn out wait for spring training is finally over, even if it did drag on for weeks. So with the new season about to begin, it’s a perfect time to take stock of the 2019 season’s rookies.
(The Twins have no rookies.)
